Phillip Nelson "Phil" Berger, 77, of Simsbury, CT, passed peacefully Sunday, July 17, 2011 surrounded by family and friends. Born June 16, 1934 in Newburyport, MA, the beloved son of Victor and Nellie Berger and brother of the late Allan Berger all of Woonsocket, RI.
He leaves his loving wife Jane, son Jeffrey Berger of Carver, MA, daughters Penny (Berger) Gernon of Westend, NC and Joann (Berger) Askew of Granby, CT, stepsons Geoff Butland of Farmington, CT, and David Butland of Long Island, NY. He also leaves three grandchildren, six step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.
Phillip graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. After many years in the corporate world he formed his own business, Quality Equipment Company, specializing in heating, refrigeration and air conditioning. Phillip was an active member of The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, Morning Star Free Masons, Becket-Chimney Corners Alumni Association, The Sports Car Club of America, The New England Trail Riders Association and The Granby Ambulance Association. He was an avid mariner, an accomplished cook who loved creating his own recipes, a fisherman, a hiker, a lawn mower repair genius, a loving husband and a devoted father.
A memorial service is planned for Thursday, September 15th at 3:00 PM at the Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury, CT. Friends may call prior to the memorial service from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Burial will be private.
