LINCOLN --- Itâs been nearly two months since Bruce Foster finished in a tie for second place with his brother, Jeff, at the 2011 Spartan Death Race, a 45-hour ultra-endurance test through a grueling 40-mile course in Pittsfield, Vt., but their accomplishment has still been the talk around Lincoln.
The brothersâ success has also reached a point where workout enthusiasts of all ages, sizes, and abilities have asked them if they could train with them and follow the extra-tough training regimen they used to prepare for and succeed in the Death Race.
Their wish will be granted. Bruce, a 1980 graduate of Lincoln High, and Jeff, an â84 LHS graduate and Cranston resident, will be kicking off a fitness/boot camp business called âOuter Limits Fitnessâ in Lincoln, which they hope to officially launch on Monday, Aug. 15, at Chase Farm.
âIâve been working out my whole life,â said Bruce Foster. âAnd everybodyâs been coming up to us and saying, âI want to work out with you guys and do all your crazy workouts and stuff like that.â And everyone else has been saying, âWhy donât you charge for these? There are boot camps everywhere.â
âSo my brother and I finally got together and we were like, âOK, letâs open up our own boot camp business.â Itâs a proven workout, I mean, we made it to second place in the Death Race (using it). So we decided, âWhy donât we start charging people for these things and well see how it goes?â â
The Foster brothers have been hard at work the past few weeks getting their fledgling business under way and out to the public, and while they donât have a website up and running yet, they recently put up an âOuter Limits Fitnessâ page on Facebook.
âWhat we want to do right now is just offer classes, and once it gets going, weâll add classes as we go along,â offered Foster. âRight now, we just want to offer (classes) three times a week, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and sign up people to monthly memberships.
âWe have all our waivers and our flyers and weâre already insured. We found out that the LLC (limited liability company) has been approved, so weâre just waiting for the paperwork to come back and weâll be ready to go.â
Foster also hopes to get his business affiliated with the Spartan Race Series, and on Saturday, he and Jeff will venture back to Vermont to take part in the Super Spartan Beast Race, a 10-mile race that features 15 obstacles, and meet with the folks in charge of the series.
âWe had a few conference calls with them,â reported Foster. âHopefully, once we get affiliated with Spartan, weâll be able with our membership to offer free passes to get into Spartan races. Then down the road, we want to have special training just for the Death Race itself, and those will be more detailed, longer workouts that could be up to eight hours each.â
When Foster and his brother trained for late Juneâs Spartan Death Race, they worked out in a unconventional manner and did extreme things from splitting wood constantly, carrying buckets of sand, and flipping over backhoe tires. In their program, they plan to carry over those same workouts and a lot more.
âWeâre going to break our workouts into cardio, upper body and lower body,â remarked Foster. âBut the big thing is that youâre getting out of the gym and away from the conventional workouts of having the nice shiny weights, an air conditioned or heated area, and everything taken care of (for you).â
Foster emphasized that all of the workouts will take place outdoors, and if its rains or snows on that day, donât bother calling him or his brother to see if the workouts are cancelled or moved somewhere indoors.
âTheyâre all going to be taking place outside, rain, snow, sun, whatever,â said Foster. âThatâs the mental aspect of it -- you have to work out no matter what -- and thatâs what Spartan races are all about.â
