Police ID man found fatally shot in trunk

August 11, 2011

LINCOLN – The victim of an execution-style slaying whose body was found in the trunk of a car parked at the edge of Lincoln Woods State Park Wednesday has been identified as Ronny Almonte.
State police said Almonte was 25 years old and had addresses in both Pawtucket and Providence.
With hands tied behind his back with a strip of cloth and multiple gunshot wounds to the head, Almonte's body was found in the trunk of a Chevy Impala parked on the shoulder of Twin River Road after a park caretaker saw blood on the bumper of the abandoned vehicle.
Other than the victim's name, investigators released few new details about the slaying yesterday. Detective Capt. James O. Demers said detectives questioned the owner of the vehicle, but he declined to say whether the individual was a suspect.
Almonte's identity was released in a statement in which the state police urged anyone with information about the killing to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 444-1216.
The Impala in which Almonte's body was discovered was parked about just a few hundred yards from an offramp from Route 146, near one of the two main entrances to Lincoln Woods. The caretaker first noticed the unoccupied vehicle about 6 a.m., several hours before reporting it to the police.
It was one of two slayings in the area with some eerie similarities that appear to have occurred just hours apart. Shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, Anthony Stone, 26, collapsed on the porch his Victorian apartment in Providence, bleeding from apparent gunshot wounds to the head. His hands had also been bound – with plastic handcuffs which had somehow broken and were dangling from his wrists before he died.
Despite the similarities, Demers says detectives don't believe the two killings are connected.
“We're not going to rule it out, but we don't believe that's the case at this time,” he said.
Providence police say Stone was out on bail for dealing cocaine and that they found drugs in his apartment after he was killed.
