WOONSOCKET — Andrew Switzer earned the coveted rank of Eagle Scout while a member of Woonsocket’s Boy Scout Troop 1106, and decided it would only be fitting to celebrate that honor at the place where his troop has learned much about scouting over the years — Camp Yawgoog in Rockville, R.I. So on Friday, Switzer, his father, Steven Switzer, an assistant scoutmaster for the Troop, and Switzer’s family members held his Eagle Ceremony at Camp Sandy Beach at Yawgoog where Troop 1106 annually spends a week of the summer.
He was joined by four other recent Eagle Scout honorees from the troop, Ryan Girard, Tom Blackshaw, Nick Pare and Kevin Parenteau, and a gathering of family members and friends of the All Saints Parish-based troop.
Troop 1106 Scoutmaster Tim Blackshaw, who has seen 10 troop members earn Eagle rank during his ten years as scoutmaster, conferred the Eagle Scout honor on Switzer during a troop Honor Court that included his cousin Josh Tellier as master of ceremonies and his uncle Michael Tellier for the invocation.
Troop members served as color guard and posted the flag, Assistant Scoutmaster Arthur Pare and the troop’s younger scouts offered readings on the meaning of scouting’s highest honor, and troop members also assisted the Switzer’s in preparing a cookout for the celebration.
Switzer and members of his troop worked to install a new flag pole at Cass Park complete with solar-powered lighting as his Eagle Project. He thanked Woonsocket Mayor Leo T. Fontaine and the city of Woonsocket, the Father Marot CYO Center, All Saints Parish, and Troop 1106 for making his Eagle project a success.
