L. Andre Chartier

NORTH SMITHFIELD- L. Andre Chartier, 81, of Colerick St., died Friday, August 19, 2011 in The Friendly Home, Woonsocket. He was the husband of Teresa (Kane) Chartier whom he married December 29, 1951.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Lucien S. and Antonia (Valcourt) Chartier.
Mr. Chartier worked for thirty years as an Air Traffic Controller for the Federal Aviation Agency, retiring in 1996. After retirement, he worked for ten years at the Franklin YMCA. He served in the US Air Force during the the Korean War. A pilot since 1953, he was a member of the RI Pilot's Association and was named their Airman of the Year in 1984. He was also a Communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, James A. Chartier of Wickford, John K. Chartier of Vianna, ME and Matthew K. Chartier of No. Smithfield, a daughter, Mary Ellen Barnatt of Milford, MA, a sister, Suzanne Bourgery of No. Smithfield, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Constance and Jocelyn Chartier and Marielle Vitale.
His funeral will be held Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at 9:30AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 63 Church St., No. Smithfield, RI. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Blackstone, MA. Calling hours are Monday from 5 - 8PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the The Friendly Home, 303 Rhodes Ave., Woonsocket, RI 02895.
