Russell J. Murray Sr.

UXBRIDGE - Russell J. Murray Sr., 79, of Sutton St. died Thur. Aug. 18 at his home. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Claire A. (Vincent) Murray; 2 sons Vincent M. Murray of Hope, ME and Russell J. Murray, Jr. of Wellesley; a daughter Mary Ellen Gordon of Waterbury Center, VT; 4 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sister Patricia (Murray) Rivet of N. Carolina and several nephews and nieces.
Born in Whitinsville on Jan. 29, 1932 he was the son of Patrick and Mary Ellen (Pennell) Murray. Mr. Murray has lived in Uxbridge for 26 years, previously living in Whitinsville. He attended Northbridge Public Schools and graduated with honors from Worcester Junior College with a degree in Business Administration. Russell was a member of a noted Air Force orchestra as well as a Chief Radio Operator while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces in Germany. He was a foreman at the former Whitin Machine Works for 20 years. Mr. Murray then went on to work at the George Meyers Company in Westboro. Later, he practiced as an independent realtor and then for Renaud Realty in Whitinsville. He was also an assessor in the towns of Blackstone and Hopedale until his retirement.
He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus Mumford Council. Mr. Murray was also very active as a Cub Master of local pack #150 and also a manager in the farm system of the Northbridge Little League. He enjoyed music and photography and played a wide variety of musical instruments. He was also a member of many local bands including, The Ronny Pasquette Band and the Art Barsamian Band.
He always made people laugh.
His funeral arrangements with Jackman Funeral Home, 12 Spring St. Whitinsville will be private and held at the convenience of his family.
In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that donations be made to the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge in Mr. Murrays name.
