LINCOLN- Kevin K. Coleman, 89, of Old River Rd., Lincoln, died Wednesday, August 31, 2011 in Cortland Place, Smithfield. He was the husband of Mona J. (Kelly) Coleman whom he married June 15, 1946.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Louis and Mary (McDonnell) Coleman.
Mr. Coleman's career was devoted to serving the needs of Rhode Islanders with a long political career and was best known for being elected as Mayor of the City of Woonsocket for six terms from January 1953 until April 1963. Prior to be elected as Mayor, he had been elected to the Woonsocket Common Council, Woonsocket Board of Aldermen, had been a candidate for Governor in 1962 and had been Chairman of the Democratic State Committee. He also was appointed Director of Administration, for former Governors Frank Licht and Philip Noel, Personnel Administrator for Governor Dennis Roberts and Chairman of Racing and Athletics.
Mr. Coleman's service to Rhode Islanders was also evident in his career as a Real Estate Agent for J.F. Sarrasin, Inc., which became J.W. Riker and is now DeWolfe of New England in Cumberland, retiring at the age of eighty-three. He had also been a former partner of Keough-Kirby Associates, Inc. and L'Union St. Jean Baptiste.
He was appointed as President of the former Fogarty Hospital, now Rehabilitation Hospital of RI, director of the Greater Woonsocket Chamber of Commerce, John E. Fogarty Foundation, Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council and American Heart Association, trustee of Woonsocket Hospital, now Landmark Medical Center, Sacred Heart Church, a member of Blue Cross Corporation, Woonsocket Housing Authority, Woonsocket Redevelopment, the advisory board for the former Old Stone Bank and Industrial National Bank (Fleet-Bank of America), the President's Advisory Council for Providence College and the Woonsocket Industrial Development Corporation.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son Kevin K. Coleman of No. Kingstown, a daughter, Mary Jane Pallister and her husband, James of Warwick, a sister, Louise Harrigan of Elmira, NY, five grandchildren, Brian and Kevin Pallister, Amy Zayas, Kelly Ablaza and Abby Coleman and three great grandchildren, Keira, Ethan and Zachary Zayas. He was the brother of the late Paul Coleman and Catherine Dunphy.
His funeral will be held on Saturday September 3, 2011 at 10:30 AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM in Sacred Heart Church, Second Ave., Woonsocket. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Farm St., Blackstone, MA. Calling hours are Friday from 4 - 8PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Beacon Hospice, Inc, One Catamore Blvd., East Providence, RI 02914 or the Kevin K. Coleman Elementary School, 96 Second Ave., Woonsocket, RI 02895.
