Joseph G. Baillargeon
NO. SMITHFIELD- Joseph G. Baillargeon, 87, of Black Plain Rd., No. Smithfield, died Friday, September 16, 2011 at St. Antoine Residence. He was the husband of Muriel A. (Marcoux) Baillargeon, whom he married October 12, 1950.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Wilfred J. and Angelina A. (Gladu) Baillargeon.
He worked for the Woonsocket Police Department for thirty-seven years, starting as a Police Officer and working up through the ranks to become Chief before retiring in February of 1984. A WWII Navy Veteran, he received a citation from the Military Order of the Purple Heart on February 18, 1984. He was the president of the Woonsocket Police Relief Association in 1953 and 1954, a life member of the RI Police Chiefs Association and President in 1983, life member and board member in1980 and 1981 of the New England Police Chiefs Association, a member of the International Association of Chiefs of police, Commissioned Police Officers Association of RI and honorary life membership of F. O. P Lodge#9, Woonsocket.. The RI Municipal Police Academy named the graduation class of 1990 in his honor. He was also a member of the U.S.S. Denver CL58 Association, Inc., Arc of Northern RI and VFW Post 6342, No. Smithfield.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Marc J. Baillargeon and his wife Vivianne and Guy N. Baillargeon and his wife Brenda, all of No. Smithfield, four grandchildren, Beth A. Halliwell, Joseph A. Baillargeon, Holly A. Remeika and Brittnay J. Clarke and five great-grandchildren, Kellan, Abbigail and Lora Halliwell and Mia and Alison Remeika. He was the grandfather of the late Gregory Brodeur and brother of the late Wilfred Baillargeon, Leona Carroll and Helen Chubka.
His funeral with Military Honors, will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 9AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, 1409 Park Ave. Woonsocket. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Farm St., Blackstone, MA. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5- 8PM in the funeral home.
