Alert neighbor helps catch alleged prowler

September 20, 2011

WOONSOCKET — An observant neighbor helped police in the arrest of a city man charged with breaking into cars on North Main Street Sunday evening.
Todd J. Green, 40, of 502 North Main St., was later arrested on a charge of tampering with motor vehicles in connection with the case, police said.
Patrolman Enrique Sosa reported patrol officers responded to the 300 block of North Main Street just before 9 p.m. after a resident of the area observed a man attempting to break into a neighbor’s van and went out to confront him.
The man, reported to be wearing a black sweatshirt, blue jeans and a baseball hat, was seen attempting to open the door of the neighbor’s vehicle but could not enter it, according to police.
The resident went out to talk to the man near the vehicle but was told “I am drunk,” before he walked off in the direction of Dexter Street, police said.
The owner of the vehicle joined the first resident out on the street at that point and the pair drove off looking for the suspect. The pair found him on Summer Street near Prospect Street entering another vehicle.
The first resident jumped out of the vehicle and again confronted the suspect and attempted to detain him at the location, police said. A bag was found at the scene containing items believed to have been taken from a vehicle, police said.
The suspect was able to break free of the man’s grip and flee back toward North Main Street with the resident following him, police said. He was reported to have entered an apartment at 378 North Main Street.
Sosa and the other responding officers took Green in to custody there on the charge of tampering with a motor vehicle, according to police.
Green was reported to have begun banging his head on the dividing screen inside the cruiser after his arrest and was transported to Landmark for treatment of a head laceration, police said.
Green was later processed on the charge at the police station and held pending his arraignment on the charge Monday in District Court, Providence.
