UPDATE: 43-year-old woman fatally struck

October 8, 2011

WOONSOCKET — A 43-year-old city woman suffered fatal injuries when she was struck by a car while walking on Cass Avenue at about 11:15 Friday night.
Police Lt. John Picard said the victim — Donna Kwandranc, of Fourth Avenue — was hit by a 2001 Toyota Avalon as she walked in the roadway near the intersection of Cass and Dulude Avenue. The impact damaged the windshield and hood of the car and threw the victim down the road a number of yards in the direction of Mailloux Street.
Kwandranc was found near the center line of the pavement, unconscious and critically injured, according to Picard.
Patrolman Thomas Duncan came upon the accident scene and assisted with responding city rescue personnel. Kwandranc was initially taken to nearby Landmark Medical Center but was then transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where she died at about 1 a.m., Picard said.
The driver of the Toyota was identified by police as Ly Aboubaca, 26, of Lincoln Street.
Picard said the accident reconstruction team was still collecting evidence Saturday to help police piece together the incident.
"We don't know exactly what she was doing out in this area of Cass Avenue," Picard said. “We still don’t know what side of the street she was coming from.”
Aboubaca told police that the accident happened so fast, he didn’t even see Kwandranc.
Police located witnesses who saw the Toyota pull into Mailloux Street after the accident but none who actually saw the victim get struck.
Drugs or alcohol are not believed to have been a factor, police said. No charges were pending against the driver as of Saturday, Picard said.
Detectives were still looking into whether Kwandranc was crossing to or from nearby Landmark Medical Center or had been in a crosswalk near Dulude Avenue.
The impact of the accident left the victim's sneakers on the road and sidewalk near Dulude and Cass Avenue, and police marked the location of several pieces of clothing found on the roadway.
Picard could not say if any charges would result from the investigation. "It's still to early to tell," he said.
