Woman charged with using another’s identity to get cable TV service

October 8, 2011

WOONSOCKET – A city woman’s alleged use of an elderly New Jersey woman’s identity to obtain cable television services resulted in her arrest at the Hanora Lippitt elderly housing complex at 1 Main St. Thursday.
Det. Sgt. William J. Coupe Jr. joined Cox Cable investigator Jack Leyden in a visit to Apartment 318 at the complex Thursday afternoon to investigate allegations that a cable box was being used illegally at the residence.
Coupe attempted several times to have the resident, Joanne Alfuso, 57, come to the door to discuss the matter but the woman answering his inquiries stated that no one by that name was inside.
Alfuso eventually opened the door and identified herself to the investigators but maintained she had not done anything illegal.
Coupe asked the resident about her use of an 85-year-old New Jersey woman’s identity to obtain cable service and Alfuso responded that she had been given the information by another woman to open a cable account.
During further questioning at the police station, the suspect was informed that the elderly woman was incapacitated and her family was cooperating with the cable company investigation.
Alfuso was found to have an arrest record in New York and New Jersey for theft and other theft-related offenses out of North Providence and Cumberland, police said. She was also wanted on a District Court, Providence, warrant for an incident in Cumberland, police said.
Alfuso was held pending a hearing in District Court, police said. The cable equipment in the apartment was taken for evidence in the case, police said.
