NORTH SMITHFIELD AND LITTLE COMPTON- Mary Townsend Russo, 88, of North Smithfield and Little Compton, died peacefully after a long illness at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital on October 13, 2011. She was the longtime companion of the late Clarke W. Bloomfield. Born in Central Falls, she was the daughter of the late George and Julia (Sullivan) Townsend of Barrington, RI.
She was the Head Librarian at Brown University, in the John Hay Library, Special Collections, until her retirement. She was a graduate of Rhode Island College and received her Master's in Library Science from the University of Rhode Island.
She is survived by her sister, Georgia Olivier, her two sons, Albert Paul Russo, M.H.A., M.S.W. and Daniel G. Russo, Ph.D. of Southington, CT. Mary also leaves a granddaughter, Samantha Spector and two great granddaughters. She was predeceased by her former husband Albert Peter Russo.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 11AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 63 Church St., Slatersville. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Portsmouth, RI. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Heritage Hills Nursing Centre, 80 Douglas Pike, Smithfield, RI 02917. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket.
