BURRILLVILLE – Over-confident? Thinking too far ahead?
Walking off the field, Burrillville high coach Amy Carbone couldn’t come up with a reason why her talented squad was simply overpowered by its Division III opponent.
That game was more than a month ago – a 5-0 defeat to Middletown on Sept. 19.
Since that defeat and the three games before it, it has been nothing but smooth sailing for the Lady Broncos. After its latest victory, a 11-0 Senior Day rout of Davies Tech on Monday afternoon, Burrillville improved its league record to 14-1-0.
“So far, we are having a great season,” said Carbone, whose squad knocked off previously-unbeaten St. Raphael Academy, 4-0, last Thursday and has outscored its league opponents, 92-8. “We had a bad game against Middletown. We didn’t really come to play. Overall, this season has been a lot better and more competitive. They have teams in the division playing everyone so it has been more competitive. The girls are working all together and having a great season.”
Currently second place in the division, the Broncos’ season could get even better with a win on Wednesday in their league finale at unbeaten Narragansett. The first-place Mariners slipped by St. Raphael Academy, 3-2, on Monday and improved to 15-0-0 for the season.
The winner of the Burrillville-Narragansett showdown will more than likely earn the divisional crown and the top seed for the upcoming playoffs.
“As far as I know the tiebreaker is based on head-to-head, whoever has the win,” said Carbone, explaining the process for determining the top seed should the two schools finish with the same record. “I am not sure, but I am worried about just going in and playing our game and having a good game. I think if we play like we did against St. Ray’s, we definitely have a chance to beat them.”
Sophomore Taylor Ross netted four goals and freshman Lauren Antoniello, senior Paige Oram and senior Sarah Barry each scored twice for the Broncos against an overmatched Davies squad (3-10-1). After a slow start, Burrillville took the guesswork out of the outcome by scoring five times before halftime. The scoring explosion continued in the later half with Ross scoring three of her tallies.
Even though a win was essentially assured in the opening half, Carbone admitted she was somewhat concerned about the psychological aspect of the game leading up to Wednesday’s tilt with the Mariners.
“It was tough today to try and keep them focused mentally because we do have the game against Narragansett,” she said. “You don’t want them to play sloppy. You want them to use this game to prepare against Narragansett. It’s tough.”
Carbone kind of had an idea that this season would be successful for her squad. She lost just three starters from last year’s team that finished 12-2-0 in Div. III-North and was ousted by Narragansett in the semifinals.
It’s been an all-around effort that has been the key this fall.
“It’s our speed. It’s our defense. We have two freshmen that actually start defense (Sydney Blais, Issis Van Pullen),” Carbone said. “Our midfield is really strong. We have two seniors (Oram, Shannon Murphy) that are in the midfield that can really take shots. Our top scorer, Taylor Ross up front, has been really able to put the ball in the net for us.”
Burrillville will try and finish up its league campaign with a win against Narragansett and some momentum for the postseason, beginning in early November.
“They didn’t really lose many seniors. It’s going to be pretty much the same team we played in the semifinals,” Carbone said. “It’s going to be a tough game. They are fast. They got some girls that can score.”
