Area runners ready for state meet

FOSTER – The state meet for cross country takes place next Sunday at Ponaganset High.
For some schools, such as the Lincoln boys' team, their “state meet” took place on Saturday at the class championships.
The Lions were among a handful of schools that needed a quality placement in their respective class meet to earn a trip to the states because they did not get an automatic berth by finishing among the top three in their division.
That has pretty much been the case for the Lions the last several years in the always-competitive Northern Division. The last time Lincoln made the trip automatically was when it finished second in the league back in 2005.
But for the fifth time in the last six years, Lincoln will be boarding a bus back to Foster for the state championships.
The Lions finished third in the Class B meet with 78 points, a comfortable 42-points ahead of fourth-place finisher South Kingstown.
Team champion Barrington (21 points) and second-place finisher Toll Gate (72 points) already qualified prior to the meet.
The Lions had to place among the top two of non-qualifiers.
“It seems like the kids rise to the occasion,” said Lincoln coach John Menna. “Today was no exception. We thought we were beaten on paper. We just beat teams that should have beaten us. South Kingstown was one of them.”
Lincoln was paced by senior teammates Matt Olean and Alex Carlson, who finished fourth and fifth-respectively. Olean covered the five-kilometer course in 17 minutes, 31.92 seconds. Carlson was not too far behind, crossing the line in 17:37.21. The remaining scoring Lions were Tom Tallo (12th, 17:58.92), Nickolai Morin (27th, 18:49.72) and Taylor Vass (30th, 19:00.68).
The Lions and all the other competitors in the Class B races (boys and girls) had to deal with chilly conditions and a driving rainstorm that began shortly after 12 noon.
“This was our states,” Menna said. “The weather was absolutely horrendous, but the kids really ran their hearts out...It always has turned out to be a big day for us. The kids have worked really hard and peaked at the right time.
Lincoln wasn't the only team from the area that saved their best for last. In the girls' Class B meet, Mount St. Charles also finished third to gain their spot in this weekend's meet. The Mounties were fifth in the division.
Brittany Sarza was the top finisher for Mount, taking 10th overall at 21:36. Teammate Lauren Deguire was 16th with a time of 21:59.

Saint Raphael Academy senior Bobby Parker continued his solid season by finishing second in the Class C race behind individual champion Patrick Butler of Mount St. Charles. Parker was in about ninth place for the first half of the race and came on strong during the late stages. He finished with a time of 16:49.96.
In last year's class meet, Parker was fifth overall.

The Burrillville girls continued their resurgence as a competitive team by placing second in the Class C meet. Prior to a 7-3 mark in the Northern Division in 2007, the Broncos last .500 or better squad in the league was a 4-4 team in 1999.
Burrillville, a combined 25-6 in the league the last three years, will be making its third straight trip to the state championships this Sunday.
“Our kids ran great (today),” said BHS coach Marty Crowley. “The goal is to be running well in October and all our kids ran well and PR'd today. We had four kids in the top 20 in the class and that's a great accomplishment for our program.”
Senior Anna Dumais was the top Bronco at the class meet, taking fifth with a time of 20:22.00. Her younger sister, freshman Betsy Dumais, was sixth at 20:26.18.
“We are excited about the possibilities of next week and trying to hopefully sneak in the top six and qualify for the New England's as a team.”
