WOONSOCKET- Helen Ann (Kaffel) Skiffington, of Third Ave, Woonsocket, died peacefully Saturday October 29, 2011. For 52 years she was the beloved wife of the late John J. Skiffington Jr., former RI Speaker of the House and RI House Majority Leader.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Tekla (Frodyma) Kaffel.
Helen was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. Always loving and compassionate, she served as a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Trinity Club, as well as a long time member of the St. Jude League. Helen was also a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program in Northern RI. She was active in local and state politics and was a member of the Democratic District Committee. She was employed by US Rubber Co and Woonsocket School System. A life-long athlete, Helen went from winning the 100-yard dash in high school, to becoming an avid tennis and golf player throughout her life. She especially enjoyed socializing with her many friends, playing cards, painting and spending the winter months in Florida.
Helen was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She leaves one daughter, Barbara (Skiffington) Hammann and her fiancé, Thomas Deffley, of Bellingham MA, four sons, Michael Skiffington, of Woonsocket, John (Jack) Skiffington III, of Woonsocket, Timothy Skiffington, of Woonsocket, and Robert Skiffington and his wife Holly, of Little Compton, five grandchildren, Patrick Hammann, of Bourne MA, Thomas Hammann and his wife Jennifer, of Bellingham, MA, John Hammann and his wife Michelle, of Franklin, MA, Alan Skiffington and his wife Suzanne, of Wakefield, RI and Bethany Grella and her husband Steven, of Mansfiled, MA, 17 great-grandchildren, Danielle, of Woonsocket, Andrew, Riley, Kaley, and Thomas, of Bellingham, MA, Nicole, Daniel, and Ashley, of Franklin, MA, John (Jack), Alex, Kyle, Aidan and Aleda, of Wakefield, RI and Abigail, Catherine, Sophia and Benjamin of Mansfield, MA, many nieces and nephews and her beloved cat, Tammy. She was pre-deceased by her daughter, Patricia, four brothers, her twin, Edward, Walter, Joseph and Julian Kaffel and three sisters, Stasia Grady, Josephine Patalik and Frances Dalton.

Her funeral, beginning with visitation, will be held Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 8:30 AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., with a mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in Sacred Heart Church, Second Ave. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Farm Street, Blackstone, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Road, 2nd floor, Bethesda, Maryland 20814.
