Mount coach Dave Belisle reported on Thursday that the four-time defending champions will face off with powerhouse Cathedral High of Springfield, Mass. on Monday, Jan. 2 in the 7:30 p.m. nightcap of a tripleheader at the home of the Boston Red Sox.
An added treat to the game is that the proceeds from it will benefit the victims of the tornado that struck Springfield on June 1.
Belisle noted that the tornado severely damaged the school to the point where it will need to be reconstructed over the next two years. The students and faculty are currently using Memorial Elementary School in neighboring Wilbraham.
“That community has been through a lot,” said Belisle, who originally looked to play Needham (Mass.) High, but after discussions with Fenway Sports Management about the plight of Cathedral, opted to play the Spring-field school. “They’ve been hit by a tornado, a hurricane, and the snowstorm we had a couple of weekends ago.
“We’re excited about going to Fenway and playing for a great cause. The kids are very excited, and I’m excited. We hope we can help raise a good amount of money and play some great hockey in a great atmosphere. It couldn’t be better.”
Cathedral, which was ranked 10th in the final Massachusetts high school rankings last season, is again expected to compete for the state’s prestigious Super Eight championship this year.
