Ponaganset hosts Burrillville on Thanksgiving

November 19, 2011

PONGANSET HIGH SENIORS ready to host Burrillville on Thursday morning include, front row, left to right: Richard Lancia, Sam Fasano, Robert Lorraine, Dylan Gadbois. Back row: Ryan Siner, Nathan Candeias, Will Girard, Connor Mathieu, Chris Larrabee, Dyllan Dean and James Parrish.

Ponaganset and Burrillville could both use a win on Thursday to finish their seasons with a good taste in their mouths.
Each squad struggled this season. Ponaganset missed the playoffs with a 3-4 record in Division II-B while Burrillville suffered through a 1-7 season in Division III.
Burrillville won this holiday game 21-0 last year on its home field. The Broncos lead the series, 14-11.
Ponaganset is a solid favorite to win this game. The Chieftains came close to being very good in II-B. They lost to a West Warwick team that went 6-1 by a 14-12 margin and then fell to another 6-1 team, Tolman, by a 21-14 score. They hit the trifecta with a 29-23 loss to St. Raphael Academy on Nov. 5 that eliminated the Chieftains from playoff consideration.
Burrillville dropped a 13-12 home decision to East Greenwich on Sept. 16 and then fell 18-12 to Lincoln. The Broncos played hard every game out and finally scored a 21-20 win at Tiverton on Nov. 5 to record their lone league win. Burrillville also defeated Scituate 45-7 in a non-league contest.
Ponaganset is led by senior quarterback Chris Larrabee and junior halfback Scott Peterson. Larrabee is ranked fourth among passing quarterbacks in the state, according to the MaxPreps statistical service. Larrabee completed 55 of 108 passes for 958 yards and seven touchdowns on the season. He only threw one interception.
Peterson ran 107 times for 607 yards and four touchdowns. He also caught 15 passes for 183 yards and two TDs.
Tight end Will Girard caught 18 passes and scored three TDs in the passing game for Ponaganset. Junior halfback Matt Greenan caught 23 balls for 344 yards and a touchdown as Larrabee spread the ball around.
On defense, Sam Fasano picked off four passes for Ponaganset. Connor Mathieu collected three interceptions.
Linebackers Robert Lorraine and Kyle Lussier combined for 105 tackles each to pace the defensive effort for Ponaganset.
Kickoff is set for 10 a.m. on Thursday morning at the Ponaganset High School field.
