FOSTER -- Hereâs a strange, but true fact: heading into its Thanksgiving Day duel with Burrillville, Ponaganset had lost its last four games, and seven of its last eight, at home on The Reservation.
But the Chieftains silenced their home woes and a four-game losing streak on Thursday by riding a solid effort from their senior class to a 27-0 victory over the Broncos before a large gathering.
âWe had a rough stretch at the beginning of the season, but the seniors really brought everything they had to this game,â admitted Ponaganset coach Brian Gendreau, whose team ends the season with a 5-6 overall record. âIâm really proud of the way they played.â
Senior Connor Mathieu scored Ponagansetâs first two touchdowns (his team-leading ninth and 10th of the season) on runs of 1 and 11 yards to help give his team a 14-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
His classmate, Sam Fasano, added the other two TDs by hauling in a six-yard pass from senior quarterback Chris Larabee late in the opening half and then scoring on a 10-yard run in the third quarter.
âI thought we did a great job running the ball,â said Gendreau. âOur line did a very good job and we used a lot of people in the backfield. And defensively, we were really solid. We had a great game.â
The Broncos, who finish the season with a 2-9 mark, but still lead the holiday series, 14-12, were led offensively and defensively by their best player, senior fullback/linebacker Kevin Deschamps.
âHeâs all blood and guts,â Gendreau reported with a touch of admiration. âHe gives everything he has on every play. Heâs an impressive young man.â
