Providence man arrested for mule-kicking officer

December 1, 2011

WOONSOCKET — A Providence man was charged with assaulting a local police officer after police responded to a domestic assault complaint at the CT Plus convenience store at 11 Hamlet Ave. Tuesday.
A female victim called police to the location at 3:04 p.m. after taking shelter from her boyfriend inside the store. Patrolman John E. Raymond, responding with Lt. Edward J. Doura Jr. and other officers, found the woman at the store and determined a domestic assault had occured.
The officers went to 194 Carrington Ave. to locate Nathaniel A. Hill, 32, of Norwich Ave., Providence, over the incident. Raymond reported Hill became combative with the officers while he was taking him into custody on a domestic assault charge and “mule-kicked” Patrolman Michael Martufi in the groin while being held against a police cruiser.
A crowd of surrounding bystanders had encouraged Hill to resist the officers, and one female stated “you got what you deserved” to Martufi after he had been kicked, Raymond reported.
Hill told the police officers his sister was an attorney and that he planned to sue them, police said. The suspect was reported to have attempted to kick the side window of the police cruiser while being transported to the police station. He again attempted to resist Raymond and other officers upon his arrival at the police station and encouraged Raymond to engage him in a fight, according to police.
Hill continued to resist the officers present after Raymond left the processing area to allow him to calm down, and was reported to have broken the plastic shielding on bars of a cell at the department while he was being secured in the area, police said.
Raymond also reported sustaining a small cut to his leg as a result of the scuffle with Hill but did not require immediate medical attention, police said.
Following further investigation by Patrolwoman Kaitlin Deslatte, Hill was charged with domestic assault and battery and domestic refusal to relinquish the telephone.
He was also charged with assaulting a police officer in connection with the assault on Martufi, resisting arrest and vandalism of city property, police said.
