WOONSOCKET --- Itâ€™s been a very, very long time since Mount St. Charles lost its season opener in hockey, but thatâ€™s what happened to the Mounties on Friday night in its Division I opener with longtime rival La Salle.
Robert Fox netted a pair of power-play goals midway through the third period to lift the Rams to a 3-1 victory over the four-time defending state champions at Adelard Arena.
The Rams held a 1-0 lead after two periods of play, thanks to Steve Rocchioâ€™s goal 10:48 into the game, but the Mounties tied the score 2:39 into the third period on a goal by Brian Campbell that was assisted by Steve Donahue and Ryan Berard.
With 7:16 to play in the game, Fox untied the score, and 54 seconds later, he gave the Rams some breathing room and their two-goal cushion.
The Rams outshot the Mounties, 39-26, but Brian Larence, who was making his first varsity start, stopped 36 shots in a valiant effort. La Salle netminder Tyler Walsh ended his night with 25 saves.
The Mounties will try to even their record tonight back at Adelard when they host neighboring Burrillville at 9 p.m.
Toll Gate wins slugfest with Ponaganset
BURRILLVILLE --- Ponaganset watched a two-goal command sail off into the breeze, as Toll Gate erupted for six third-period goals and skated to a 10- 6 victory in their Division II-North opener for both teams at Levy Arena.
Mike Giorgio had a goal and four assists and Nick Saccoccio and Tim Smith each scored two goals and added an assist for the Chieftains, who scored four goals in the second period to grab a 6-4 lead.
Cody Donovan netted the Chieftainsâ€™ first goal 2:53 into the game, and the Chieftains outshot the Titans, 34-30.
The Chieftains will return to action tonight back at Levy and attempt to spoil the debut of the St. Raphael/Providence Country Day/Wheeler School co-op team. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
Burrillville falls to Barrington in OT
BURRILLVILLE -- Colin Fay produced his second goal of the night 2:33 into overtime to lead Barrington to a 3-2 victory over Burrillville in the two sidesâ€™ Division I opener on Friday night at Levy Arena.
Down 2-0, the Broncos forced overtime when Andrew Etheridge netted a pair in the final 3:37 of regulation. Pat Callanan and Jake Duhamel set up his first goal, and Evan Lafond assisted on the second.
The Broncos outshot the Eagles, 34-25, but Barrington goalie Andy Gailbraith was stellar in stopping 32 shots. Burrillville net minder Jacob Toback finished with 22 saves.
Burrillville/Ponaganset girls win with ease
BURRILLVILLE -- The Burrillville/Ponaganset co-op team spoiled the debut of the South County Storm on Friday night by cruising to an 8-0 victory in the season opener for both teams at Levy Arena.
Freshman Emily Cardon had a varsity debut to remember for the Broncos, as she scored three goals and added an assist.
Molly Solitro and Kali Kut each had a goal and an assist, and Sam Roberts, Kelsey Koprusak, and Audrey Jerome added the other goals.
The Broncos outshot the Storm, a co-op team that is made up of players from North Kingstown, South Kingstown, and Narragansett, by a 38-6 margin, and goaltenders Brittany Bebeau and Taylor Duquette teamed up for the shutout.
The Broncos return to Levy tonight for a 7 p.m. showdown with La Salle.
N.S. girls fall to Warwick co-op team, 3-1
WARWICK -- Britney Evangelista stopped 26 of the 29 shots she faced, but her strong effort alone wasn't enough to prevent North Smithfield from falling to the Warwick co-op team, 3-1, on Friday night in their season opener at Thayer Arena.
Hannah Decelles scored a goal off passes from Courtney Sweeney and Nicole Dumais for the Northmen, who only took 15 shots on net.
The Northmen will play their home opener tonight at 7 p.m. at the Rhode Island Sports Center against Lincoln, which will be playing its first varsity game.
