MANVILLE - Olha Mode, 94, passed away on Dec. 2nd from complications from a hip fracture, at the Holiday Retirement Home. A long-time resident of North Providence, Olha moved to the Holiday in 2009.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Dmytro Mode and Catherine (Rudka) Mode Boyko and sister of the late Dmytro Paul Mode, who was killed in active service during WWII. Olha worked for the Army Corps of Engineers and the Veterans Administration.
She was secretary to the chief of surgery at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center for 30 years until she retired in 1977.
She was a former officer of the church council of St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Woonsocket, and was a member of the Ladies Sodality. Olha was a woman of many talents. She delighted her relatives with beautifully decorated doll cakes.
She was an avid gardener,, growing and preserving the fruits of her labors. She was accomplished at knitting, crocheting and cutwork, creating many family heirlooms. One of Olha's great joys was participating in the Monday vareneky-making sessions at St. Michael's church.
Olha is survived by many cousins: Ann Chaharyn Paszak of West Roxbury, MA., her Canadian cousins, Jennie Pidwisocky, Irene Gerych, Mike & Carl Starodub and Pat Hamilton, also Dr. Joanne Hudson and Patricia Lee Chaharyn both of Richmond, VA. and Mary-Jane Burke of Sudbury, MA. Her Funeral will be Tuesday at 9:00 AM from the Kubaska Funeral Home, 33 Harris Ave. Woonsocket, with a Funeral Service at 10:00 AM in St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 74 Harris Ave.
