LINCOLN - DeCotis Joan, M (Godin) a longtime teacher of the Cumberland Public and Woonsocket Catholic School systems, passed away Wednesday morning at her home surrounded by her loving family, after a fifteen year long battle with lung cancer. She was 67.
She is survived by her husband of forty two years, Paul DeCotis. She leaves her daughter Kristen Liguori and her husband Ralph of Cumberland, her son Thomas DeCotis and his wife Cristina of Hingham, Ma., her three grandchildren Nicholas, Allison and Jonathan Liguori. She also leaves her sister Joyce McGovern and her husband Mark of Narragansett.
Born to the late Roger and Marie (Heffernan) Godin, Joan grew up in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Providence frequenting her father's restaurant, The Ever Ready Diner on Admiral St. She attended St. Pius School, St. Mary's Bay View Academy, and graduated from Salve Regina University, Newport before obtaining her teaching accreditation. After briefly working in the Providence School System in the 1970's, she relocated to Cumberland with her family in 1980 and began teaching for the Catholic School System in Woonsocket. Later in her career, she left Woonsocket for the Cumberland Public School System, spending most of her career teaching at the Cumberland Hill Elementary School before retiring in 2004.
Volunteering for The Brothers of the Sacred Heart food program was one of her favorite charities, and she also contributed to other numerous non-profit organizations. She was a member of Kirkbrae Country Club, Lincoln and Hazards Beach Club in Newport. She was a lifelong summer resident of Matunuck, RI and a former member of the Blackberry Beach Club, Willow Dell Beach Club and Matunuck Community Association. She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Matunuck and St. John Vianney parish of Cumberland.
Her funeral will be held on SATURDAY at 8:45am from BELLOWS-FALSO FUNERAL CHAPEL 160 River Rd. Lincoln, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Vianney Church Diamond Hill Rd. Cumberland at 10am. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Relatives and friend are invited and may call FRIDAY 4-8pm.
