Tax sale notices sent out in error

January 3, 2012

WOONSOCKET — On December 31, 2011, delinquent notices were mailed for water, sewer, and trash ratepayers with regard to the scheduled sale of water, sewer, and lien sales to be conducted in March. It has come to our attention that certain ratepayers received these notices erroneously. Upon review, it has been found that the mailing occurred due to an error in the data used by the outside vendor that the city utilizes for these mailings. The City of Woonsocket regrets and apologizes for any inconvenience that the mailing may have caused.
The error was limited to those accounts which were incorrectly identified as delinquent. The City has been in contact with the vendor who will correct the matter through a subsequent mailing to account holders that are delinquent. Account holders who received the notice in error will also receive a letter clarifying the matter and ensuring that they are not part of the tax sale group. The city will ensure that all corrections are properly documented. If there are any questions, residents should contact City Hall at 762-4600.

Incompetent Mayor and Staff

My water and trash services were suspended over a year ago.

I received one of these notices because the city still bills for sewer and trash even though the water has been disconnected and trash discontinued (they even collected the barrels) for a year. They city is assesing $1,000 for this period when the services were disconnected!

Home is vacant with a scheduled closing date shortly after the "tax sale".

The buyer would be paying all outstanding water, sewer and trash bills.

However, the city refuses to work with me or push the tax sale out to after the closing date, so in the end it will kill the sale, the house will go into foreclosure and we will file for bankruptcy. And the city will get nothing.

The city is acting unreasonably. The mayor likes to use the term "community" but these acts are not reminiscent of a "community".

Tax sale equals eviction. The taxes and fees that have built up over the years due to complete incompetence are the same as being thrown out for not paying the rent.Patriarcha says pay up or we break your legs.Fontaine says pay up or we take the roof over your head. Not too much difference is there?

Why did this happen to begin with ? My wife and I recieved one of these last Saturday and after reading it, my wife was in tears . I tried calling City Hall yesterday to find out about this , only to get hung up on every time . I ended up going to the Tax Accessor's office, to be told that this was sent because we were delinquent on a $200.00 sewer bill from 2011. 200 bucks? And the city had the nerve to send us a notice telling me that they were going to put my home up for auction if it wasn't paid for by March ? IMO,not only should the city get a new outside vendor , but they should also fire the finance director for allowing this to happen in the 1st place ! This is BS and anyone with a brain can clearly see it. No wonder why people are moving out of Woonsocket !
