Two Clippers crowned at Redskins Invitational

Cumberland's Erik Travers was named Oustanding Wrestler at the Redskins Invitational, held this past weekend in Sanford, Me.

SANFORD, Me. — Cumberland took home two individual champions and a fourth-place team finish from the highly competitive Redskins Invitational tournament on Saturday.
Erik Travers was named Outstanding Wrestler in the event after pinning all four of his opponents en route to the 145-pound championship.
Teammate Tom Lacroix was nearly as impressive while ruling the 190-pound class, pinning Tyler Hancock of Danbury, Ct. in 2:42 of the title match. Lacroix had one other pin, a technical fall triumph and a bye during the competition. It was the unbeaten senior’s third straight tournament title this season.
Sophomore Cody Beaudette finished second at 113 pounds, losing to New England champion Zach Bridson of Timberlane, N.H. in the final.
Aaron O’Toole, a first-year senior wrestler, impressed with a third-place finish at 160 pounds. Jon Maccini placed third at 138 after scoring two tournament victories last month.
“Erik Travers just dominated his weight class,” Cumberland coach Steve Gordon said. “He pinned his man in the finals after building a 13-0 lead. Erik was very focused. He just had 11 stitches taken out of his forehead from an injury suffered at our last tournament. He wrestled with a facemask and it didn’t bother Erik at all.”
Cumberland has a tough week ahead as it hosts South Kingstown on Wednesday, visits North Kingstown on Thursday and then hosts the annual John D. Gorman Memorial Tournament on Saturday at The Wellness Center. The event, named in honor of a former Cumberland High wrestler who passed away from brain cancer several years ago, starts at 9 a.m. and runs until around 7 p.m.
“And then next Monday, on Martin Luther King Day, we will host a quadrangular meet with East Providence, Burrillville and Pilgrim,” Gordon said. “It is a lot of wrestling in a short period of time but we should be in decent shape. The problem is, there’s a lot of sickness going around and we’ve seem teams forfeiting matches like crazy recently.”
