WOONSOCKET — A man robbed the Ronzio Pizza Restaurant on Providence Street of an undetermined amount of cash after holding the business' manager at gunpoint Sunday evening.
Patrol units were sent to the 375 Providence St. business at 7:30 p.m. after the armed suspect fled on foot with the stolen cash and a rifle used to carry out the robbery, police said Monday.
Patrolman Joseph A. Zinni was told the robber fled in his direction on Providence Street as he responded from South Main Street but did not see anyone on way to the crime scene. Police described the robber as a white male, about 5-foot, 5-inches in height, weighing about 170 lbs., and dressed all in black.
The man had entered the restaurant and approached the 60-year-old manager and a 28-year-old female clerk before bringing up the rifle, police said. He was reported to have worn a black, half-faced ski mask while conducting the robbery. His clothing included a black jacket and black pants, police said.
The stunned female clerk fled into the backroom of the business where a 47-year-old cook was working, while the manager remained at the counter with the robber, according to police. The armed robber demanded that the manager give him money and the manager complied while turning over the undetermined amount of cash.
The robber dropped some of the money to the floor of the business and stooped to pick it up before fleeing the establishment, police said. No one was reported hurt in the incident, police said.
The man was seen turning toward the direction of South Main Street while leaving the location, police said.
The local case follows the armed robbery of a Pawtucket convenience store by two men Friday night. One man in the incident at the Corner Store at 136 Spring St., Pawtucket, fired a shot at a store clerk from the assault rifle after the clerk tossed a candle at him. The robber was described as a black male, 6-feet, 2-inches tall and wearing a hooded sweatshirt. The second robber in the store was described as being armed with a handgun. The second man was reported to be wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a half-mask and was said to be between 5-feet, 6 inches tall and 5-feet, 8-inches tall.
The store clerk was not hurt in the incident.
Woonsocket police were still investigating the Ronzio Pizza robbery on Monday and could not say whether any connections had been found to the Pawtucket incident. Anyone with information on the local robbery can call the police department at 766-1212 or the department's anonymous tipline at 769-4444.
