WOONSOCKET -- The final tally on shots on net in Monday night’s contest between Mount St. Charles and Barrington was an astounding 78-32 count in favor of the Mounties.
And while the Mounties managed to claim the Division I crossover game by an 8-0 score, they weren’t able to put away the visiting Eagles until the start of the third period, as they netted four goals in the first 7:18 of play to finally send the fans to Adelard Arena’s parking lot.
Junior center Brian Belisle scored a pair of goals and set up another to lead a balanced offensive assault for the Mounties, who are now 5-4 in the division and in fourth place in the division’s power standings.
Ryan Berard also added a goal and a pair of assists to help the Mounties cop a 3-0 lead after two periods of play, and Brian Campbell also had assists on those first three goals.
The Eagles, who fell to 4-5-1, saw their goaltenders, starter Chris Calitri and backup Nick Marra, team up to stop 70 shots, with Calitri turning away 59 of them before being replaced by Marra 5:49 into the final period.
The Mounties, meanwhile, received an excellent effort from their netminder, Brian Larence. He recorded 32 saves for the shutout and made a handful of brilliant stops in the second period when the Eagles managed to unload 16 shots on him.
The Mounties outshot the Eagles (4-5-1) by a 28-7 margin after a period of play, but only had Belisle’s first goal of the night (with 4:33 on the clock) to show for their efforts.
While Larence found himself busy in the middle period, the Mounties took 25 shots on Calitri and managed to put two past him on rebounds in front of the net, as Berard and Belisle lit the lamp during the first eight minutes of play.
The Mounties finally put the game away in the third period on an unassisted, shorthanded goal by Brandon Borges 1:52 into play that was soon followed by goals from Ben Handanyan, Callan Morisseau, and James Casilli. Steve Donahue’s goal with 1:36 to play sealed the victory.
The Mounties will now face a very big weekend against two of the parochial rivals. On Friday at 9:30 p.m., they head to Warwick’s Thayer Arena to face unbeaten Bishop Hendricken (10-0-1), and the following night at 9, they host second-place La Salle (6-3-1) at Adelard.
