WEB ONLY: MSC wins, Lions' Leclaire stops 72 shots

February 11, 2012

The Mount St. Charles hockey team improved to 9-5 on Friday night by posting an 8-0 victory over Lincoln at Adelard Arena.

WOONSOCKET --- As expected, Mount St. Charles breezed past Lincoln on Friday night at Adelard Arena by rattling off five goals in the second period to break open a close game and pave the way for an 8-0 victory.
But the story of the night was Chris Leclaire, the Lions’ freshman goalie, who turned away an astounding 72 shots, the most saves in a game by a netminder in this state in recent memory. Leclaire currently leads all Division I goalies in saves with 390.
The Mounties (9-5) outshot the Lions (3-8) by an overwhelming 80-18 count, yet weren’t able to net their first goal until there was eight seconds left in the first period, as Brian Belisle scored the first of his two goals on the night.
Brian Campbell made it a 2-0 contest 37 seconds into the middle period, and Tyler Scroggins, Nick Bennett, Ben Handanyan, Brandon Borges, and Deven Votta added the Mounties’ other goals.
Votta’s goal was the first of his varsity career, and Bennett also concluded the contest with three assists. Borges and Scroggins each added two assists, and Brian Larence recorded the shutout in net.
Both teams are back in action tonight. The Mounties will visit Smithfield at 7 p.m. at the Smithfield Ice Rink, and the Lions will host Barrington at 9 p.m. at the Rhode Island Sports Center.
