PROVIDENCE --- Lauren Levesque tipped in a shot from Cassandra Czarn 3:55 into overtime to lift Mount St. Charles to a thrilling 3-2 victory over La Salle Academy on Sunday afternoon in the Mounties’ regular-season finale at Providence College’s Schneider Arena.
The victory was the 13th in a row for the two-time defending champions, who are 15-1-0. They had clinched the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the 'State Championship' playoffs with a tight 2-0 win over the Burrillville/Ponaganset co-op team less than 24 hours earlier at Adelard Arena.
Freshman Elisabeth Berard opened the scoring for MSC with a power-play goal at 10:34 of the first period, but LaSalle came right back with a power-play goal of its own, as Karoline Inman tipped in a shot from Jordan Moore.
The second-place Rams (11-4-0) took the lead on an unassisted goal by Sarah Migliori at 3:27 of the third period, but Caitlin Shea tied the contest with her 12th goal of the season, a backhanded power-play score at 8:06.
Both goalies stood out in this game, as MSC freshman Ari Tourtellot stopped 17 shots for Mount and senior Holly Scott blocked 24 for LaSalle.
The Mounties, who outshot their opponents 75-10 during the regular season, will battle the eventual fourth-place finisher in the standings in the semifinals on the weekend of Feb. 24-25.
