NORTH SMITHFIELD- Catello T. Scarano, MD, 78, of Old Smithfield Road, North Smithfield, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at The Holiday Retirement Home, Manville. He was the husband of Maria S. (Makar) Scarano, whom he married more than 45 years ago.
Born in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy, and raised in Como and Torino, Italy, he was the son of the late Francesco and Maria (Valanzano) Scarano.
Dr. Scarano was a 1958 graduate of the University of Torino Medical School in Torino, Italy. He came to the United States in 1959 and completed his medical training in Massachusetts and Canada, including Medical Internship at St Luke's Hospital, New Bedford, MA, 1959; Residency in Pathology at Salem Hospital, Salem, MA, 1961; Residencies in Internal Medicine at Faulkner Hospital, Boston, MA, 1962, Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, Boston, MA, 1963, Westminster Hospital, London, Ontario, Canada, 1964; and Residency in Cardiology at the University of Alberta Hospital, Alberta, Canada, 1965. He opened his Internal Medicine practice in Woonsocket in 1966 and cared for patients for 42 years before retiring in 2008.
During his practice, Dr. Scarano was a member of the medical staff at Landmark Medical Center, the former Woonsocket Hospital and the former John E. Fogarty Memorial Hospital where he was President of the Medical Staff in 1977-78. He was also Medical Director at The Friendly Nursing Home. Dr. Scarano was a member of the Woonsocket District Medical Society and Rhode Island Medical Society, and in addition to RI, he was licensed to practice medicine in Vermont and Washington.
Beyond his love of medicine, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, bird-watching, and photography. He was an avid student of European history and Western philosophy, and liked watching old movies and listening to classical music.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four daughters, Deanna M. Koproski and her husband James of Brooklyn, CT, Deborah A. Scarano of New York, NY, Sandra A. Crombie and her husband Charles of Saugus, MA and Jennifer L. Scarano of Falmouth, MA, one sister, Gianna Chandler of West Roxbury, MA, four grandchildren, Maxwell, Mia, James and Lucas and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services and Burial were under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main Street, Woonsocket. There were no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dr. Scarano's memory may be made to the North Smithfield Ambulance and Rescue Association Fund, c/o The RI Foundation, One Union Station, Providence, RI 02903.
