John S. Gomes Jr.

UXBRIDGE- John S. Gomes Jr., 88, of 115 King St. died Thurs. Feb. 23 at home after an illness.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years Donna J. (St. Denis) Gomes; his 2 children Marion L. Graves and her husband Jeffrey of Harrisville, RI and Steven J. and his wife Kelly Gomes of Uxbridge; 2 grandchildren Allyson Graves and Joshua Graves with another baby Gomes on the way in August; cousins Laura Burgo and Joey Cravino; and several nephews and nieces.
Born in Central Falls, RI on May 13, 1923 he was son of John S. Sr. and Palmira (DeJesus) Gomes and lived in Uxbridge 35 years previously living in Pawtucket.
Mr. Gomes worked for Cumberland Engineering in S. Attleboro as a foreman in their machine shop. He worked here over 25 years retiring when he was 61. He then went to work for the former Rico's Market and Victory Markets in Uxbridge where he was a familiar smiling face. He was a U.S. Army WWII veteran serving in the North African and Italian Theater where he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals. An avid horseman he loved spending time on his farm taking care of the animals. In his younger years, he was a golden gloves boxer before and during his military service. He was a member of Uxbridge VFW Post 1385 and the Baystate Trail Riders Assoc. John will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather. He was a member of St. Mary's Church.
His funeral will be held Tues. Feb. 28 from Tancrell-Jackman Funeral Home, 35 Snowling Rd. with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 71 Mendon St. Burial will follow in the VA National Cemetery in Bourne. Calling hours in the funeral home are Sun. Feb 26 from 2 to 5 p.m. Donations may be made to the Homeless Veteran's Shelter, 69 Grove St. Worcester, MA 01605.
