Woonsocket fire injures 3, displaces 10

March 14, 2012

WOONSOCKET – An unidentified city woman was injured when a fire broke out in the kitchen of her 50 Jackson St. apartment building just before 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Deputy Fire Chief Paul Russell said the woman suffered minor burns and was transported to the hospital by rescue for treatment.
A teenager living in the apartment building also suffered an ankle injury escaping the fire and Russell said a city firefighter was injured in the effort to knock down the blaze.
“It was a kitchen fire on second floor with extension of the fire into the third floor,” Russell said at the scene.
The fire also worked its way between the siding and exterior wall of the building, he said.
The responding fire companies, including mutual aid from North Smithfield and nearby communities, brought the fire under control within an hour and 15 minutes, Russell said.
“Approximately 10 people are displaced and won't be able to return to their homes,” he said.
The white vinyl-sided apartment building contained three-floors but the top-floor apartment was vacant, Russell said.
Heat, smoke and water damage from the fire appeared to be confined to the second and third floors of the building, he said. The exact cause of the fire remained under investigation Wednesday but neighbors reported hearing that the woman on the second floor was hurt when she returned to the kitchen, found the fire in the area of the stove, and attempted to put it out.
Temporary repairs were being made Wednesday afternoon as firefighters mopped up. Russell said the damage was extensive enough on the second and third floors to prevent the building from being reoccupied.
The residents were being assisted by the Greater Providence Chapter of the American Red Cross and would be found temporary housing, he said.
