Adolpha Yerka

BELLINGHAM- Adolpha Yerka, 97, a resident of Oakland Grove Health Center in Woonsocket, Rhode Island for the past 20 months, a former long time resident of Bellingham, Mass. died Wednesday, March 21, 2012.
Born in Rockville, Connecticut, she was the daughter of Stanislaw and Aniela (Niemic) Bziukiewicz.
Adolpha was predeceased by her parents, her husband Joseph Francis Yerka who died in June 1980 and her brother Myron Bziukiewicz died in 1999.
Mrs Yerka is survived by her daughter Patricia Bock and her husband Howard of Newark, DE., her grandson Glenn M. Bock and his partner, Amy Groover of Bowie, MD and granddaughter Karen L. Savidge and her husband Steven of Lewes, DE.
Adolpha was an avid reader, perpetual "student" and "teacher". A graduate of Woonsocket High School she later returned to her "studies" and graduated as an LPN in 1956. Adolpha worked at a Woonsocket Hospital for a period of time and then spent 17 years as a nurse at the Massachusetts Correctional Institute in Framingham. In addition to being one of the founders and a prime supporter of the Bellingham Senior Center for many years she planned trips for the Center to many places in the eastern United States and Canada. She was active in the Polish Conversation Group, Cribbage Club, the Quilters, RSVP Club, Bellingham History Museum, Library Discussion Groups and others well into her 90's. She was a true "World Traveler" having visited Puerto Rico, Japan, Singapore, Israel, Egypt, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Peru where she especially enjoyed Machu Picchu, the Soviet Union and once sailed to the United Kingdom on the "QE II"
One of the highlights of her life, and one of the few times she was caught completely off guard, was when a group of her friends and acquaintances successfully planned and sprung a "90th Birthday Celebration" for their "adopted community grandmother" in late September 2004.
Funeral services and burial were private. Adolpha will be laid to rest, next to her husband, in Union Cemetery, North Smithfield, RI. Arrangements were under the direction of Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Bellingham Senior Center, 40 Blackstone Street, Bellingham, MA 02019 or to the Bellingham Library, 100 Blackstone St., Bellingham, MA 02019.
