Man arrested for attempted murder

March 29, 2012

WOONSOCKET — A city man was arrested at a North Smithfield motel Wednesday on an attempted murder charge after allegedly slashing two others in a bloody feud outside a convenience store earlier this week.
Alvin Huggins, 28, was taken into custody at Traveler’s Motor Lodge by members of the North Smithfield and Woonsocket police departments, said Detective Lt. Eugene Jalette. Police seized a steak knife and a blood-stained sneaker from his room at the motel, located at 1210 Eddie Dowling Highway.
David Ducharme, 28, was still a patient Thursday at Rhode Island Hospital after Huggins allegedly attacked him outside CT Plus Convenience Store on Hamlet Avenue on Sunday night, Jalette said. Ducharme suffered a gaping laceration that extends across his left cheek, from his earlobe to his lip, narrowly missing his carotid artery.
“Huggins goes to the convenience store and there are two or three other people,” said Jalette. “There’s an argument. Huggins takes out a knife and slashes one of them — two of them, actually, but one doesn’t want to file a complaint.”
The other victim, Lamont Robinson, 20, drove himself to Landmark Medical Center with a severe laceration on his arm and was released after treatment, Jalette said. Robinson declined to make a statement to police, who are still unsure what triggered the argument.
Ducharme and Huggins were not strangers, Jalette said. Ducharme was able to identify Huggins as his attacker, though police are still attempting to obtain a more detailed statement from him.
Huggins is the same man who made headlines last summer in another splashy crime of violence – not as aggressor, however, but victim. On July 14, he crashed his leased BMW into a house after someone fired a gun at Huggins while he was traveling with his girlfriend in the passenger seat.
After passing through metal, the bullet made contact with Huggins’s shoulder, but it didn’t penetrate his skin, said Jalette.
Traveling in reverse, the car jumped a curb and smashed into a ranch at Florida Avenue and Robinson Street. The car crashed through the exterior wall of the house and landed in the basement. Police later arrested Justin Menard, 25, on charges of attempted murder. That case is pending while Menard remains held at the ACI as a violator after striking someone with a pool cue while he was free on bail for shooting Huggins.
Huggins has an arrest record dating back to 2002 in Rhode Island that includes narcotics offenses, firearms charges and violent assaults, according to court records. The Boston native was sentenced to 15 years in Superior Court in April 2006 after pleading no contest to a Woonsocket police charge of felony assault. He was ordered to serve three years of the sentence at the ACI, with 12 years suspended and probation.
Jalette said police responded to CT Plus about 11:30 Sunday night after receiving a 911 call. The clerk at the store later told police Ducharme had come running into the store, bleeding heavily from the neck and screaming that he’d been stabbed.
Though Huggins is listed as having no permanent address, Jalette said police saw his Chevy sedan parked outside the motel after monitoring several locations he is known to frequent. Jalette said the same woman who was in the car with Huggins the night he crashed on Florida Avenue answered when police knocked on the door of his motel room. Two small children, a 3-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy, were also in the room.
Huggins, said Jalette, was taken into custody without incident.
