WOONSOCKET- Gertrude B. (Benjamin) Kane, 92, of Woonsocket, died May 16, 2012 in St. Antoine Residence, No. Smithfield. Her husband of 34 years, Walter J. Kane, died in 1983.
Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Elyse and Gladys (Fitzgerald) Benjamin.
Mrs. Kane was a graduate of St. Theresa's High School, Blackstone and received an Associate's Degree in Business from Hill College. She was an accomplished seamstress, owning her own alteration shop in Providence and making her daughters' beautiful wedding dresses. Mrs. Kane was a homemaker with a flair for interior design and enjoyed working on many remodeling projects. An avid gardener, she enjoyed tending to her flower beds and vegetable gardens. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren as well as making handmade outfits, costumes, and stuffed animals for them. Mrs. Kane was a devoted wife, mother, and nana and was the heart of so many special gatherings. She was a member of St. John Vianney Church for over 51 years.
She leaves four sons, Kevin E. Kane and his wife Lila of Smithfield, Colin P. Kane and his wife Marie of Cumberland, Brian J. Kane and his wife Carol of Woonsocket and Christopher J. "Kip" Kane and his wife Andria of Providence; four daughters, Holly M. Kane of Westlake Village, CA, Karen E. Jalbert and her husband Eugene of Belleville, IL, Colleen A. Earnshaw and her husband Timothy of Providence and Laurel K. Daly and her husband Brian of Portland, ME; three sisters, Germaine Remillard of Bellingham, Jacqueline McKee of Lakeland, FL and Constance Lachance of Blackstone; twelve beloved grandchildren, Melinda, Michael Patrick, Nicholas, Matthew, Christian, Thomas, Joshua, Margaret, Sarah, Hannah, Nora and Valeaire; four great grandchildren, Benjamin, Anya, Emily and Alexander; many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by three brothers, Bernard, Lionel and Ulysses Benjamin and her sister, Charlotte Holbrook.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 8:45 AM from the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. John's Vianney Church, 3587 Diamond Hill Rd., Cumberland. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, West Wrentham Rd., Cumberland. Calling hours are Monday from 4 - 8 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Antoine Special Care Unit, 10 Rhodes Avenue, North Smithfield, RI 02896.
