NORTH SMITHFIELD- Robert E. Tainsh, Sr., 87, resident of North Smithfield, passed away on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at his home with his family by his side.
Born in Dracut, MA, he was a son of the late John G. and Helen E. (Sweeney) Tainsh, Sr.
Robert was an Army World War II Veteran who served with the Burma Road Engineers as a diesel mechanic. He had the distinction of being the first driver on the China Burma Road while overseas serving his country. When Robert returned from overseas, he was employed as a tugboat captain. For the next 42 years, he worked for the Lang Brothers Truck Company as a truck driver before retiring in 1989. He was a member of the New England Teamsters Trucking Industry and a member of Teamsters Local 251 Retirees Chapter. He was a former Fourth Degree Knight with the Pascoag, Rhode Island Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his 3 children, Jacquelyn Potter, RN and her husband Gary of North Smithfield, RI, Gail Cuddy, RN and her husband Mac of Warwick, RI and Dr. Robert E. Tainsh, Jr. of Winter Park, FL. In addition, he is survived by 8 grandchildren, Megan Tucker, Nathan Potter, and Trey Cuddy of RI and Robert, Laurel, Erica, Kelsey, and Valerie Tainsh of Winter Park, FL. Robert leaves behind 1 great granddaughter, Grace C. Potter. He is survived by 2 sisters Catherine Melton and her husband Harry of Warwick, RI and Marilyn Rose of Smithfield, RI.
Robert was preceded in death by his first wife Rita (Farrell) Aubin and his wife of 39 years, Stella (Pulnik) Tainsh. He is also preceded in death by a brother John Tainsh, Jr. and sisters Helen Tainsh, Doris Nichols and Anne Charlonne.
His funeral will be held Friday at 9AM from the Keene-Brown Funeral Home 445 Greenville Road, North Smithfield, RI with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM at St. John's Church in Slatersville. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday from 6-8PM.
