Police probing armed robberies

June 23, 2012

WOONSOCKET – Police are investigating a series of three armed robberies at local businesses over the past two weeks.
Police Detective Jamie Paone, department spokeswomman, said the robbers hitting the businesses threatened employees with large wooden sticks in two of incidents while demanding money and threatening employees with a wrench in the third incident.
All three robberies remain under investigation; detectives are probing whether the same robber may have conducted the similar crimes.
The Shell gas station at 1030 Social St. was struck at 6:26 a.m. on June 11 by a suspect reported to have a stick with him, Paone said.
Another robbery involving a person with a large wooden stick occurred at Sam's Smoke Shop at 805 Park Ave. at 10:15 p.m. on June 14, according to Paone.
And in the third incident under investigation, a suspect wielding a wrench robbed the Hong Kong Restaurant at 774 Social St. at approximately 11:56 a.m. on June 16, Paone said.
Det. Thomas Gormely is heading the investigation and can be reached by calling 401-766-1212.
