WOONSOCKET — East Woonsocket, Lincoln, Burrillville, and Cumberland American came away with impressive victories on Saturday in a quadrupleheader at Aylsworth Park’s Hartnett Field that kicked off the R.I. District IV Major Division all-star tournament.
In Pool A action, East Woonsocket was the winner of a 5-4 thriller with Glocester in the day’s opening game. Down 4-3 heading into the top of the sixth inning, EWLL tied the score on a solo home run by Jimmy Cabral and went ahead later in the frame with an unearned run.
Cabral also belted a three-run homer in the third, but Glocester came back to take the lead.
While Cabral was one of the day’s top performers, so was Lincoln’s Connor Sheehan in his team’s 12-0 victory over North Smithfield that was halted after five innings by the mercy rule.
Not only did Sheehan belt the game’s first pitch for a long home run, but he also pitched four outstanding innings of no-hit ball, striking out 11 batters. N.S. picked up its only hit in the fifth off reliever Kyle Marrapese.
In Pool B play, another splendid pitching performance was turned in by Burrillville’s Jason Cabral in the day’s finale, as he struck out 10 batters in 5 2/3 innings of work and gave up a sixth-inning unearned run in his team’s 7-1 victory over Cumberland National.
Burrillville also received a solo home run from Sam Hetu and a three-run homer by Tyler Richards.
Cumberland American, the defending New England champion with a new cast of players this season, began its title defense with a 6-3 victory over Scituate-Foster. The winners used a three-run rally in the fourth inning and received some solid pitching from Mike DeBlois.
The schedule resumes Monday with a pair of Pool A games that features Smithfield visiting North Smithfield and East Woonsocket hosting Lincoln in 5:30 p.m. games. In Pool B action, a doubleheader at Garvin Field will pit Bernon against Cumberland National at 5:30 p.m. and Burrillville against Cumberland American at 7:30.
