WOONSOCKET -- A body was found floating in the South Main Street dam of the Blackstone River, in downtown Woonsocket, late this morning.
Using a rubber raft, police and firefighters pulled the body off the edge of the flood control gate at around noon.
The body appeared to be that of a black adult male. He was wearing a black T-shirt, what appeared to be swimming trunks or shorts that were black with a red and grey stripe across the waistline. He also had on a pair of black high-top sneakers.
Det. Sgt. Matthew Ryan, spokesman for the Woonsocket Police Department, said the victim appeared to be in his mid to late 20s, but offered no further details.
Ryan said there were no signs of foul play, but the body was turned over to the state Medical Examiner's Officer for an autopsy.
Police wouldn't speculate how long the body was in the water.
"At this point, the next thing we are going to do is try to identify the body," Ryan said.
