BURRILLVILLE - Brother Roger (Sylvio R.J.) Neveu, S.C., 85, of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Provincial House, Pascoag, RI, died after a brief illness on July 22, 2012 at Mt. St. Rita Health Centre in Cumberland, RI.
Born in Nashua, New Hampshire, he was the son of the late Evangeliste Neveu and Ernestine (Rochette) Neveu.
Brother Roger (Sylvio) entered the Brothers of the Sacred Heart January 1, 1945 at Harrisville, Rhode Island. He pronounced his first vows in Granby, Quebec, Canada in 1946 and his perpetual vows at Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket, RI, in 1952. At St. Michaels College, Colchester, VT, he completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1955 in Mathematics.
Brother Roger (Sylvio) was a professed religious for 66 years, serving in assignments as a teacher in New England at Sacred Heart Academy, Central Falls, RI, from 1948-1953 and Mt. St. Charles Academy, Woonsocket, RI, from 1953-1954. In 1954, Brother Roger began a 25 year assignment to Lesotho, Southern Africa, where he served as a teacher, prefect of resident students, and regional treasurer and regional councilor for the Brothers in Lesotho.
In 1979, Brother returned to the United States and taught from 1979-1992 at Bishop Guertin High School, Nashua, New Hampshire. He also served as treasurer of the local community of Brothers. He retired to the Provincial House in 2002 and was assigned to Mt. St. Rita Health Centre in 2006.
Brother Roger (Sylvio) is survived by his sister, Sister Estelle Neveu, CSC, of the Sisters of Holy Cross, Nashua, NH, and a faithful friend, Sr. Claudette Gagnon C.S.C., and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Sr. Cecile Neveu, C.S.C., Yvonne, Rita, Jeanne DArc, Therese and his brothers, Roger and Brother Edgar Neveu, SC.
The wake will be held at the Provincial House, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI, Friday, July 27, 2012 at 9 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial in the Chapel of the Provincial House at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Brothers' Cemetery in Pascoag. In lieu of flowers, donations in Brother Rogers memory can be made to the Brothers of the Sacred Heart African Mission Fund, Business Office, Brothers of the Sacred Heart, 685 Steere Farm Road, Pascoag, RI 02859. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brown Funeral Home 1496 Victory Hwy., Oakland.
