Poll: Blue Cross would be blamed if sale falls through

WOONSOCKET — If the sale of Landmark Medical Center falls through, most Rhode Islanders would blame Blue Cross, a new poll suggests.
The poll, conducted by Marttila Strategies of Boston, was commissioned by the United Nurses and Allied Professionals, Landmark Medical Center, and Steward Health Care, the for-profit chain that wants to buy Landmark.
“The results of this poll clearly demonstrate that Rhode Islanders, in general, tend to have a favorable opinion of Steward Health Care and of the sale of Landmark Medical Center to Steward,” said Chris Callaci, general counsel for UNAP. “Residents clearly do not think Blue Cross should have the power to control what hospitals in Rhode Island stay open or closed. And if the purchase falls through and Landmark closes, more residents than not will blame Blue Cross – and with just cause.”
