Steward gets Landmark closing extension

July 30, 2012

WOONSOCKET — Boston-based Steward Health Care System now has until Aug. 31 to close on the sale of financially-troubled Landmark Medical Center and Rehabilitation Hospital of Rhode Island.
In a statement released late Monday, Amy Kempe, spokeswoman for State Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin, said Steward Health Care's request to waive Kilmartin's condition that the closing on the sale take place 60 days from the date of his May 25 decision to approve the sale was “denied.”

Steward Perseverates

Enough already Steward- buy it or back out. As for the AG's extending the deadline- a couple questions- what was the purpose of the original deadline (now past)? Why is August 31st appropriate for the AG's new "deadline"? What was the rationale offered by Steward to the AG for the extension? Probably nothing. Actually Steward requested the AG that his
deadline be waived rather than asking for an extension. It seems highly unlikely that any suit v. Blue Cross will be resolved by then. Five dollars says that Steward will not purchase by August 31st either. When will the Court tire of this charade? Steward's ongoing extortion of all parties continues unabated. Maybe the Court should seek another offer? Their record in the LMC matter demonstrates that Steward does not keep its commitments- rather it "weasel words" and conditions everything.

Steward Granted Deadline Extension By RI AG

I don't get it. What's with the AG's "deadline"- what purpose does it serve? if there is/was a good rationale for it, why has the AG extended it?

It seems that Steward enjoys toying with RI - especially the people of Woonsocket and the court. There is zero chance that any Blue Cross court suit will be concluded by then . . . so why does Steward need more time?

Either buy the hospital or don't.
