Donoyan seeks volunteers to rebuild system

August 8, 2012

WOONSOCKET – Budget constraints have forced the school district into consolidation mode, but Schools Supt. Giovanna Donoyan is looking for volunteers who are ready to rebuild a vibrant public school system.
The superintendent announced the effort to seat a five-year Strategic Planning Committee this week to set academic goals for the future of the school district.
Donoyan says it may seem like the school district is in the doldrums now, but it should shoot for the stars and work hard to reach them in the future. Ultimately, she says, school districts that are perceived as high-performing become drivers of economic development by attracting new residents.
“A community is only as good as its school district,” she says. “There’s infrastructure that grows out of a good school district.”
Donoyan says the district is looking for 20 to 25 volunteers to sit on the planning committee. It’s great if applicants have some special talent or expertise they think might support their contribution, she says, but what’s most important is the desire to serve.

Lots of school systems throughout the country use volunteers to fill the voids at schools. Some as lunch hall moderators and so on....
Up until now, we've had paid people performing those tasks.

Volunteerism is a wonderful idea and more people in this world should give it a try. It's not all about getting but rather give and take... Lots of people want to get into giving but don't know where to start. Well, the Woonsocket School system is a good place to start.
