Fernandes banks on retaining wall to protect River Falls from rising water

August 11, 2012

WOONSOCKET – Gary Fernandes is thinking big again at his River Falls Complex at Market Square.
You can see just how big from the fence overlooking the lower Woonsocket Falls section of the Blackstone River where it curves around the corner of the former Falls Yarn Mill, which is home to the Complex' River Falls Restaurant and CitySide nightclub.
Fernandes and his development company have been hard at work completing a long-planned patio and walkway around the back of the early-1800s mill building that he had started planning more than six years ago.
“This was in the works even before the restaurant,” Fernandes said while standing on the not-yet-completed walkway last week. The work will provide the back corner of the mill with a protective barrier of rip rap and concrete that should be able to survive the high water of a 100-year storm in the area.
The high waters of past storms swelling the Blackstone River have threatened the lower level of the mill and raised the potential of damage seen at other riverside properties along the Blackstone.
