WOONSOCKET — Summer vacation is winding down for local students and that had Jacqueline Dowdy back before the School Committee this week talking about the annual Back to School Celebration in the city.
Dowdy is the Woonsocket coordinator for the statewide Back to School program that has put free school supplies in the hands of students for the past 13 years. Woonsocket has participated for the past eight years.
This year's Woonsocket celebration will again be held at the St. James Baptist Church at 340 Main Street and include the distribution of free backpacks filled with school supplies. The Back to School Celebration will begin at 10 a.m. on August 18 and continue until 1 p.m., according to Dowdy.
Similar Back to School events will be held at the Bernard F. Norton School at 364 Broad Street in Cumberland, Veterans Memorial Elementary School at 150 Fuller Ave., Central Falls, McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Thundermist Health Center in West Warwick, CCRI in Newport and at four locations in Providence.
