Pit bull euthanized after attack

September 18, 2012

WOONSOCKET – The pit bull “Biz” was euthanized Tuesday, a day after he attacked three members of a Sayles Street family in their home.
Tracy Cyler, 37, her son, Anthony Perry, 19, and daughter, Keia Perry, 18, were all taken to area hospitals to be treated for severe bite wounds on their ankles, arms and upper thighs.
Cyler told The Call she had taken temporary custody of the dog a few days earlier from a friend while she tried to find a permanent home for the brawny six-year-old. The owner of two other pit bulls said Biz turned on her when she tried to break up a fight between the dog and another male pit bull in the kitchen of her Sayles Street ranch.
“It started fighting with my dog and I got in between,” said Cyler, a cloth bandage wrapped around her swollen forearm. “By then, it was too late.”
The attack came as a complete surprise, said Cyler. Although she did not know much about the dog’s history or how it was raised, she said, “the dog was eating out of my mouth the day before. I don’t know what happened. The dog was fine.”
Dogs that bite are normally quarantined for 10 days for observation even if they have been inoculated for rabies, as Biz had. But Animal Control Officer Doris Kay obtained special permission from the state Department of Health for a waiver to euthanize the dog immediately because, she said, as a result of its behavior on Monday, the dog is unadoptable.
