Woonsocket woman killed on Rte 146 while walking

September 19, 2012

NORTH SMITHFIELD – Police say the victim of a fatal pedestrian crash on Route 146 Tuesday night was a 29-year-old Woonsocket woman.
Jessica M. Gill was struck by a minivan as she crossed the southbound lanes in the vicinity of Iron Mine Hill Road about 10:17 p.m., said Capt. Glenn G. Lamoureux.
She was pronounced dead at the scene by the state medical examiner.
Gill had children and was last known to have resided at 2281 Diamond Hill Road, part of the Walnut Hill complex, police said. Managers at the complex said no one by that name currently leases a unit in that cluster, and neighbors did not recall Gill.
The operator of the minivan was identified as Jason Jerominek, 42, of Burrillville. He was uninjured.
So far, the cause of the accident is undetermined, but Lamoureux observed that it occurred during windy rainstorm that knocked down tree branches and caused power outages throughout the area. Visibility may have been a factor, he said.
“The weather conditions weren’t favorable,” he said. “Whether that was a factor is something we may have to take a look at.”
Lamoureux said it was unknown whether Jerominek had applied the brakes prior to striking Gill. He said police were still investigating where Gill was coming from or where she was going when she was crossing the highway.
No charges were filed against Jerominek. An investigation by the police department’s accident reconstruction team is pending, said Lamoureux.
