PROVIDENCE â Democratic State Rep. Jon Brien of Woonsocket yesterday filed a federal complaint challenging the legitimacy of the candidate who defeated him in the primary, Woonsocket firefighter Stephen M. Casey.
Brien said Casey is in violation of a law known as the Hatch Act, which prohibits employees of state, county and municipal governments from engaging in partisan political activities if their employers receive federal funds.
Because the Woonsocket Fire Department received a $300,000 training grant from the Department of Homeland Security in January, Brien said, the law applies to Casey.
âThe Hatch Act prohibits a person, in this case, Mr. Casey, from even running for state representative due to his employment with the Woonsocket Fire Department, and that departmentâs acceptance of federal funding,â said lawyer S. Joshua Macktaz, who is representing Brien.
