George L. Bedard

WOONSOCKET- George L. Bedard, 85, of West Park Place, died November 10, 2012 in Landmark Medical Center, Woonsocket. He was the husband of the late Muriel (Tessier) Bedard.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Leo and Edna (Champagne) Bedard of Carnation Avenue.
Mr. Bedard worked over thirty years for the Woonsocket School Dept., retiring as an electrician and served as union president of AFSCME Local 1137. He was a WWII Navy Veteran participating in the Battle of Iwo Jima. George served on the USS Topeka and was part of the prize crew that brought the captured Japanese cruiser Sagawa to the Bikini Atoll for the nuclear testing. George was a lifelong member of several local societies including; the Elks, Circle Laurier and Italian Workingmen's Club.
He is survived by his son, Gary Bedard and his wife Amy of San Mateo, CA; two brothers, William Bedard of Blackstone, MA, and Robert Bedard of Chepachet; and his granddaughter, Kallan Bedard.
Calling Hours will be held Thursday, November 15, 2012 from 4:30-6:30 in the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main, St. Woonsocket. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to RI DAV, 380 Westminister Mall, Providence, RI 02903.
