Couple starts warming up; gas turned back on

November 14, 2012

WOONSOCKET — Two former city residents took steps Tuesday to get the heat back on at Kevin and Jayne Donnell’s Social Street apartment.
After reading about the couple’s difficulties in working out a longstanding NationalGrid bill for natural gas service, a former city resident now living in Columbus, Ohio, and another former resident living in Bellingham contacted The Call to see what they could do to get the couple’s apartment heated.
Both men said they wished to help the couple anonymously in the spirit of next week’s Thanksgiving holiday.
“It was heartbreaking when I read about it,” the former resident now working in Columbus said when called about his interest in the helping the couple.
The man had sent an email to The Call with his offer of assistance along with his contact information. The Bellingham resident said he and his wife also wanted to help out after contacting the paper by telephone.
“I’ve been lucky to be pretty well off in my life and I just wanted to help someone in the spirit of the holidays,” the retired former city resident said.
Both benefactors said they wished to contribute directly to the couple’s outstanding bill so that the gas company’s requirement for restoring service would be met.
The contributions combined to get a gas company crew at the Donnells apartment building Wednesday afternoon and their heat restored before another cold night settled upon them.
