Library vandalized

November 20, 2012

WOONSOCKET — Harris Public Library usually uses its Facebook page to publicize positive news, like the arrival of a new computer to help the unemployed find work or a recent party for young followers of the Wimpy Kid diary series.
But Monday morning many friends of the 303 Clinton St. facility were shocked when they saw a photo of the main reading room showing numerous shattered windows, the floor littered with shards of glass. A potted plant that got caught in the line of fire drooped sadly under the weight of the debris.
Library Director Leslie Page said it was the worst case of vandalism at the library since she started working there 28 years ago.
“It’s pretty upsetting they targeted us for whatever reason they did,” said Page. “I can’t imagine what their motive was.”
Page said she’s hoping the Facebook publicity will help lead to the arrest and prosecution of whoever was responsible for the damage, which occurred Sunday night.
“We want people to see it,” she said. “It’s our community library and we’d like people to see what goes on in it, the good and the bad. I would like to see the people that did this caught and punished.”
The damage was discovered about 6:43 p.m. Sunday after police responded to a report of an alarm that is triggered by motion inside the library, prompting police to initially suspect a break. The library was closed at the time.
